St. John's Episcopal Hospital's psychiatry program is a small (16-resident), community-based, safety-net training experience serving the underserved Rockaway Peninsula population, with heavy exposure to nursing home and adult home psychiatric populations, substance use disorders, and chronic mental illness. The curriculum is structured around a continuity outpatient year (PGY3) at a Community Mental Health Center, off-site rotations (SUNY Downstate neurology, Mercy Medical chemical dependency, NUMC child inpatient), and a PGY4 Wellness and Recovery Center rotation for chronically ill patients with comorbid substance use—reflecting a service-delivery, whole-community orientation rather than a research or subspecialty pipeline.
