Program Identity & Fit

This is a university-affiliated but community-based psychiatry residency, anchored at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, a high-volume municipal safety-net hospital serving one of the most ethnically heterogeneous catchment areas in the country (approximately 170 cultures, 100 inpatient beds, 7,000+ ED visits and 45,000+ outpatient visits annually), with cultural psychiatry embedded structurally rather than offered as an elective add-on. Training is broad and public-sector-oriented, spanning inpatient, CPEP, a women's forensic unit, C-L, chemical dependency, TMS/ECT neuromodulation, first-episode psychosis, and community reintegration services, supplemented by rotations at Mount Sinai Hospital and NYC H+H/Queens for exposure to different systems of care. Scholarly activity (journal clubs, case conferences, PRITE/DSM review, four months of elective time usable for research) is present and structured but supportive rather than central, with academic productivity framed mainly around fellowship placement and junior-attending responsibilities in the senior year. The program appears to value residents who can function autonomously as primary clinicians for an underserved, linguistically and culturally diverse urban population and who will use elective time for clinical depth, subspecialty fellowship preparation, or community-oriented psychiatry rather than bench research.
