Program Identity & Fit

This is a four-year community-based, safety-net psychiatry residency at Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center within One Brooklyn Health, serving a historically underserved Central Brooklyn population with high rates of psychiatric hospitalization, substance use, and social determinants of health burden. Training is structured around a traditional progression: PGY1 medical/neurology foundations plus inpatient and CPEP emergency psychiatry, PGY2 subspecialty exposure (C-L, addiction, geriatric psychiatry), PGY3 outpatient and psychotherapy modality training, and PGY4 chief/leadership responsibilities, with a fast-track pathway into Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship. Research exposure is introductory (basic statistics/design coursework and group QI projects) rather than a driving institutional priority, and the program explicitly states it will give "extra consideration" to applicants with psychiatry experience and research exposure. The environment emphasizes direct clinical service, acuity management, and community mental health rather than academic subspecialization, reflecting OBH's identity as an anchor safety-net system for Central Brooklyn.
