Program Identity & Fit

LAGMC/USC Pediatrics is a large, safety-net academic program based at one of the busiest public hospitals in the western United States, training residents to care for an extraordinarily diverse, medically underserved Los Angeles County population with high acuity (Level III NICU, PICU, burn center, major trauma volume). The program is explicitly mission-driven around health equity and advocacy for marginalized communities, with structured resident autonomy, a resident-driven curriculum (problem rounds, weekly housestaff policy meetings), and dedicated DEI infrastructure (ABC Committee, funded initiatives, visiting scholarship for underrepresented students). Scholarly activity is embedded but practically oriented—QI projects, case reports, and subspecialty research collaborations rather than basic-science output—supporting a balanced output of primary care, hospitalist, and fellowship-bound graduates (roughly half pursue fellowship, half primary care/hospitalist practice per alumni data). The program values residents who are personally invested in serving underserved and immigrant populations, comfortable with high clinical volume and progressive autonomy, and engaged in system-level advocacy alongside clinical training.
