Program Identity & Fit

CAMC Urology is a five-year community-based, hospital-sponsored program built around a single large tertiary referral center (1,138 beds) serving 500,000 patients across central and southern West Virginia, giving residents high-volume, broad-scope exposure across oncology, andrology-infertility, reconstruction, kidney transplantation and endourology. The program is distinguished by exceptionally high procedural volumes for a program its size (100+ transplants/year, 300+ ureteroscopies, 130-140 robotic cases at chief level), Center of Excellence designations in robotic surgery, continence care, and urology, and a dedicated pediatric urology rotation at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Research is present and encouraged (all residents participate, present, and publish) but is not positioned as the program's central identity; instead, the emphasis is on producing well-rounded clinical/surgical urologists, with strong board pass rates and in-service exam performance, and graduates who successfully secure fellowships when desired. Culturally, the program markets itself around a tight-knit, low-turnover, community feel (only two residents per year) and quality-of-life in Charleston, suggesting it values collegiality and fit within a small cohesive team as much as raw academic output.
