Program Identity & Fit

FAU's General Surgery Residency is a multi-hospital, community-based academic program spanning St. Mary's, Boca Regional, Bethesda East/West, and West Boca Medical Center, producing over 9,000 operative cases annually across trauma, colorectal, vascular, breast, surgical oncology, and minimally invasive/robotic services. The program is structured around graduated autonomy from PGY-1 to chief year and is distinguished by its mandatory "value-added year" after PGY-3, offering dedicated research with named mentors, an in-residency trauma/critical care fellowship, or an executive master's degree (healthcare administration, public health, informatics, business of medicine). Research is woven throughout via a monthly Research Collaborative and structured scholarship expectations, and graduates pursue a range of subspecialty fellowships (vascular, burn, surgical oncology, plastics, endocrine, congenital cardiothoracic) at outside institutions. The program values residents who combine strong operative/clinical performance with demonstrated scholarly output and an interest in using the value-added year to build fellowship or advanced-degree credentials.
