BronxCare's General Surgery Residency is a community-based, safety-net program in the South Bronx that builds broad operative volume from intern year onward, with residents graduating with upwards of 1,000 cases. Training is anchored at BronxCare but supplemented by structured off-site rotations for subspecialty exposure - burns at Jacobi, trauma at Lincoln, transplant/hepatobiliary at Westchester Medical Center, thoracic at Mount Sinai, and endoscopy at Queens Hospital Center - giving residents a multi-institutional network beyond a single tertiary center. The program emphasizes a structured faculty advising relationship paired with individualized mentorship toward each resident's chosen subspecialty. Alumni outcomes show heavy fellowship placement (vascular, colorectal, cardiothoracic, MIS/bariatric, HPB, hand/microsurgery), indicating the program is oriented toward producing subspecialty-bound general surgeons rather than primarily community generalists, though some graduates do enter general surgery attending practice directly.
