Program Identity & Fit

This is a community-based, HCA Healthcare-affiliated psychiatry residency at a statutory teaching hospital linked to USF Morsani College of Medicine, built around high-acuity inpatient behavioral health units (adult acute, step-down, and geriatric) at HCA Florida Largo West Hospital, an active consult-liaison service, and a growing ECT program. Training emphasizes bedside mastery of acute crisis stabilization and biopsychosocial team leadership, with a structured progression from inpatient-heavy PGY1/PGY2 years into a fully outpatient PGY3 continuity-of-care year and a PGY4 that adds addiction psychiatry, forensic psychiatry at the county jail, VA exposure, and a "Junior Attending" supervisory role over junior residents. Scholarly activity is institutionally supported (national HCA research infrastructure, dedicated coordinators, Grand Rounds and conference presentation opportunities) and strongly encouraged though not positioned as the program's central identity. The program values residents who can function with escalating autonomy in acute, diverse-acuity clinical settings and who are drawn to a broad general-psychiatry skill set spanning inpatient, forensic, addiction, geriatric, and outpatient psychotherapy domains rather than a narrow subspecialty focus.
