Program Identity & Fit

Citrus Health Network is a Federally Qualified Health Center in Hialeah, FL, academically affiliated with FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, and notably the first FQHC in the country accredited to host a psychiatry residency, reflecting a mission-driven, safety-net, community mental health identity rather than a tertiary academic one. Training spans crisis/emergency psychiatry, inpatient adult and child units, consult-liaison at Mount Sinai Medical Center, geriatric and addiction psychiatry, a longitudinal PGY3 outpatient psychotherapy year, and an away ECT/TMS visiting fellowship, giving residents broad exposure to underserved, culturally diverse (predominantly Hispanic) adult and pediatric populations across integrated primary care and behavioral health sites. The program feeds directly into its own ACGME-accredited Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship, which frames research, community wraparound services (including child welfare/foster care through Citrus Family Care Network), and interdisciplinary collaboration with psychology and social work trainees as core to its identity. Structurally the program values clinicians oriented toward community-based, culturally attuned, holistic care of vulnerable populations rather than subspecialized bench research or quaternary hospital medicine.
