The University of Minnesota Neurology Residency is a long-established, university-based academic program (founded under AAN founding president A.B. Baker) that trains residents across four distinct clinical environments—the tertiary academic UMMC, the safety-net Hennepin County Medical Center, the Minneapolis VA, and the community-based HealthPartners/Regions system—giving graduates broad exposure from complex inpatient neurocritical care to community outpatient subspecialty practice. Research and academic development are structurally embedded through the SPRINT research track (protected time, 1:1 mentorship, IRB/statistics coursework aimed at early-career funding) and a parallel Neurology Educator track, alongside PGY-1 integration into the department with weekly continuity clinic and dedicated didactics from day one. With approximately 85% of recent graduates pursuing fellowship—many staying on as UMN faculty or matching at institutions like Harvard, UCSF, and Stanford—the program's orientation is heavily academic and subspecialty-driven, and it emphasizes resident leadership (GME committee, Resident Leadership Academy, chief resident roles) and individualized career mentoring from the outset.
