Trinity Health Grand Rapids/Michigan State University Internal Medicine is a faith-based, university-affiliated community teaching program built around a large employed primary care base and a referral hospital serving a region of over one million people, with explicit institutional commitment to homeless, Spanish-speaking, HIV-infected and other underserved populations through dedicated community clinics. The X+Y curriculum separates inpatient and ambulatory responsibilities, 24/7 in-house hospitalist/intensivist coverage supports resident autonomy rather than service burden, and the program explicitly prepares residents for primary care, hospital medicine, or subspecialty fellowship without steering toward one path. Research is present but modest in scope: a supported faculty researcher, a required intern poster and a resident quality-improvement project, oriented toward quality/safety rather than bench or outcomes research.
