Johnston Memorial Hospital's internal medicine residency is a community-based, ACGME-accredited program in rural Southwest Virginia, operating within the Ballad Health system that explicitly frames itself as a rural-health model serving the Appalachian Highlands. The resident body and clinical culture are heavily osteopathic-influenced through a formal VCOM clerkship affiliation, with core training built on a 116-bed community hospital, a longitudinal continuity clinic using the Yale ambulatory curriculum, and standard subspecialty exposure (cardiology, pulmonology, GI, heme/onc, ID) rather than tertiary/quaternary complexity.
