Program Identity & Fit

CMEF is a community-based, university-affiliated categorical internal medicine program in Canton, Ohio, integrating two hospital systems—Aultman Health Foundation and Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital—with Northeast Ohio Medical University to give residents a broad clinical base spanning tertiary inpatient medicine, critical care, and continuity outpatient care at a federally qualified health center. The program explicitly frames three parallel outcomes as equally legitimate: academic hospital medicine, subspecialty fellowship, and outpatient primary care practice, without privileging one track. Scholarly activity is present and encouraged (regional/national conference presentations, ACP Doctor's Dilemma competition, an elective research block) but is not positioned as the program's defining identity. The program values a historically diverse resident and faculty mix, teamwork, and steady, high-volume exposure to complex and rare disease presentations across community and quaternary-adjacent settings.
