MCW's Anesthesiology program is the sole training program in Southeast Wisconsin, functioning as a large academic department (87 residents) with access to more than 150 clinical faculty across 10+ sites including Froedtert Hospital, Children's Wisconsin, and the Milwaukee VA, producing case volumes well above ACGME minimums across cardiac, obstetric, regional, and pain subspecialties. Research is deeply embedded in program identity: MCW holds an NIH/NIGMS T32 grant (one of only 16 anesthesiology programs nationally) and an NIH/NHLBI R38 mechanism, and offers a dedicated four-year STAT physician-scientist track with 11 protected research blocks culminating in a faculty instructor year with 80% protected research time. The program offers seven anesthesiology subspecialty fellowships in-house, internal moonlighting pathways tied to performance benchmarks, and a combined Anesthesiology-Pediatrics track, signaling a structure built to retain and cultivate residents toward both community consultant practice and academic/subspecialty careers. The program values applicants who can leverage its high-volume clinical training while also engaging with its substantial research infrastructure, whether through a dedicated Categorical-Research track or general scholarly participation via conference presentations and case reports.
