Program Identity & Fit

THMEP's Transitional Year is a small (13-resident) community-hospital program anchored at Tucson Medical Center, a nonprofit regional hospital, with core rotations shared alongside University of Arizona Internal Medicine and Surgery residents across TMC, Banner University Medical Center, and the Southern Arizona VA. The program functions as a launch pad rather than a terminal specialty, with alumni consistently moving into advanced categorical training in radiology, anesthesiology, radiation oncology, and other specialties, many staying within the University of Arizona system or regional network. There is no research infrastructure or expectation described; the emphasis is instead on a broad elective menu (dermatology, neurology, ophthalmology, PM&R, radiology, rheumatology, and more), structured wellness programming, and a supportive, work-life-balance culture. The program appears to value residents who fit comfortably into a tight-knit, community-oriented Tucson environment and who already have a clear, non-TY-specific specialty destination lined up.
