Program Identity & Fit

ChristianaCare's Transitional Year is explicitly structured as a feeder pathway into the institution's own Diagnostic Radiology residency, with TY residents integrated into radiology's educational activities, quality improvement projects, and mentorship structures from PGY-1 onward. The curriculum offers broad flexibility across internal medicine, family medicine, surgery, pediatrics, OB-GYN, emergency medicine, and ambulatory care, with substantial elective time allowing residents to sample both medicine subspecialties and non-medicine fields (radiology, pathology, anesthesiology, dermatology, PM&R). The training environment is a large, high-acuity academic health system (Level I trauma center, tertiary/quaternary referral base) paired with community hospital exposure, giving trainees a wide pathology mix without the intensity of a purely tertiary program. Given its structural tie to radiology, the program is built for interns who already have a categorical or advanced position lined up elsewhere and need a well-organized, low-friction preliminary year with built-in professional development and wellness support.
