Program Identity & Fit

Western Reserve Hospital's General Surgery residency is a community-based, osteopathically-rooted 5-year program that builds a broad general surgery foundation through progressive autonomy, culminating in chief residents running their own service at WRH. Clinical training is distributed across a community hospital base with structured subspecialty immersion at higher-acuity partner sites, including Level I trauma exposure (UH Cleveland Medical Center, with an option to rotate at Shock Trauma Baltimore), pediatric surgery at Akron Children's, thoracic and hepatobiliary/pancreatic surgery at UH Cleveland, and additional general surgery/trauma coverage at UH Portage (Level III trauma). Research is structurally supported but not central to program identity - residents complete mandatory CITI/HSR/GCP training, have access to a biostatistician, protocol builder, and LECOM-affiliated grant funding, reflecting institutional infrastructure rather than a research-driven mission. Graduate outcomes lean toward fellowship subspecialization (trauma, bariatrics, MIS, plastics, vascular, cardiothoracic, breast reconstruction), and the program's explicit language about final-year residents honing skills "for future private practice" signals a dual value on both fellowship readiness and community surgical practice competence.
