Program Identity & Fit

This is a community-based, high-acuity general surgery residency at Wellstar Kennestone, a Level I Trauma Center with one of Georgia's busiest emergency departments, offering residents early operative autonomy and case volumes exceeding 1,000 by graduation. The curriculum emphasizes broad operative exposure across trauma, emergency general surgery, vascular, transplant, thoracic, colorectal, and surgical oncology through rotations at multiple Wellstar and Piedmont-affiliated hospitals, with a dedicated robotics curriculum culminating in an equivalency certificate. Research is supported through resident-driven clinical/QI projects and conference travel funding but is not positioned as central to program identity, consistent with graduate outcomes split between community/rural private practice, academic careers, and a range of subspecialty fellowships (breast, endocrine, colorectal, vascular, transplant, trauma/critical care, MIS).
