WellSpan York Hospital's General Surgery Residency is a community-based, university-unaffiliated program built around a Level I Trauma Center, delivering high-volume operative experience (average 1,259 major cases per chief resident, well above ACGME minimums across nearly every category) within a five-year ACGME-milestone curriculum. Residents rotate through rural sites (Gettysburg, Ephrata) and gain subspecialty exposure via Johns Hopkins (transplant, pediatric surgery), reflecting a program that blends community surgical practice with structured tertiary/rural exposure rather than a purely academic quaternary identity. Research is expected, not merely available: residents must participate in projects, present at national conferences and peer-reviewed journals, supported by a dedicated Emig Research Center team and an annual Discovery Day, though outcomes show a fairly even split between fellowship-bound graduates (critical care, MIS, colorectal, transplant, thoracic) and those entering general/community surgical practice directly. The program values early clinical autonomy, progressive operative responsibility (chief resident clinic service), and a well-rounded surgeon capable of independent practice or fellowship subspecialization.
