Virginia Mason's general surgery residency is the oldest surgical training program in the Pacific Northwest, operating as a tertiary/quaternary referral center with an unopposed operative experience augmented by rotations at Harborview Medical Center (trauma/burns), Seattle Children's Hospital (pediatric surgery), and St. Michael Medical Center. The program is organized around the Virginia Mason Production System, a systems-based quality improvement methodology that residents apply directly through committee participation (Code Blue, Transfusion, IRB, GME), signaling an identity built on process discipline and continuous improvement rather than pure academic output. Training emphasizes early operative autonomy for junior residents, a structured robotics curriculum, and a broad case mix spanning colorectal, HPB, vascular, thoracic, cardiac, and rural surgery, with an optional dedicated research year and active resident-driven scholarship in colorectal outcomes and surgical education research led by named faculty mentors.
