UTHealth Houston's General Surgery Program is a high-volume, tertiary academic powerhouse anchored in the Texas Medical Center, combining Memorial Hermann-TMC (the nation's busiest Level 1 trauma center and Life Flight base), the underserved county safety-net LBJ General Hospital, and MD Anderson Cancer Center for subspecialty oncologic exposure. Chief residents graduate with over 1200 operative cases, and the program maintains a dedicated military matriculation partnership with the US Army alongside a Khan Military Scholarship supporting military trainees. Research is deeply embedded through optional two-year dedicated research tracks (basic science, translational, outcomes/health services), T32 postdoctoral fellowships, a C-STEP pediatric surgery clinical research fellowship, and CeTIR trauma research labs, reflecting a historical trajectory where nearly half of graduates become academic surgeons and over 80% pursue fellowship. The program values residents who can operate with graduated autonomy at a busy county hospital, engage rigorously with structured didactics and QI curricula, and commit to scholarly output alongside clinical volume.
