Program Identity & Fit

This is a five-year categorical general surgery program built around UT Medical Center, the region's only Level I Trauma Center, giving residents a high-acuity, broad-exposure clinical experience across general, cardiothoracic, vascular, oncologic, pediatric and trauma/critical care surgery due to the limited presence of competing fellowship programs at the site. The educational structure is faculty-team based (four to five attendings per resident team) with continuity clinics, a SCORE-based didactic curriculum, mandatory conference attendance, and simulation training through a dedicated Center for Advanced Medical Simulation. The department explicitly states its mission is to develop surgeons for both community practice and academic medicine, with a structured resident research year and scholarly activity expectations built into the curriculum. Distinctive features include an international rotation (Kenya), close faculty mentorship via an assigned advisor/ombudsman system, and resident involvement in departmental governance and program evaluation.
