UConn's General Surgery program is a university-based academic program built on a multi-site consortium model spanning two Level I trauma centers, a free-standing children's hospital, an academic medical center (UConn John Dempsey Hospital), and a community hospital, giving residents a high-volume, complex, and specialty-diverse operative experience across distinct institutional cultures. Research is structurally embedded rather than incidental: residents engage in a longitudinal research curriculum and may pursue an elective two-year dedicated research fellowship at UConn or an outside institution of their choosing, reflecting an academic orientation that supports both community-track and academic-track surgeons. Education follows the SCORE curriculum with protected Friday didactics, simulation training, and resident-led journal clubs, and residents can layer institutional certificate tracks (Health Disparities Scholarship Track, IMPACT Leadership) onto their clinical training. The program values comprehensive multi-site clinical exposure as a tool for career differentiation, with faculty largely trained and retained internally, suggesting a culture oriented toward mentorship continuity and gradual professional development within the Hartford system.
