Program Identity & Fit

This is a seven-year academic general surgery residency based at the University of Chicago Medical Center, a tertiary/quaternary referral center on the South Side, with additional rotations at the affiliated community-based, high-volume NorthShore University Health System and exposure to a Level 1 adult trauma center. The program explicitly frames its mission around producing leaders in academic general surgery and its subspecialties, backed by a Resident Research Advisory Committee that tailors research placement across basic science, outcomes/translational research, surgical education, and ethics. Distinctive structural features include a Resident Acute Care Surgery Service granting chiefs graduated autonomy and teaching-assistant roles, an intern Bootcamp with simulation and ACS-ERRA assessment, a proprietary intraoperative feedback tool (STAT), and the PEER mentorship/wellness program organizing residents into longitudinal peer "families." The program values residents who can navigate both a high-complexity quaternary academic environment and a busy community/trauma system, with strong emphasis on structured teaching, feedback, and professional camaraderie.
