MetroHealth/Case Western Reserve is a university-affiliated safety-net program built around a Level I Trauma Center and Comprehensive Burn Center, giving residents high-volume, high-acuity operative exposure from PGY1 onward within a low resident-to-faculty ratio structure of more than 50 board-certified surgeons. The program is explicit about serving a low-socioeconomic, multi-racial, multi-ethnic population, embedding longitudinal social determinants of health curricula and communication training alongside standard operative training. Research is structurally integrated (optional 1-2 year dedicated research blocks, $30M/year departmental research enterprise, ties to the Population Health Research Institute and Center for Reducing Health Disparities) and graduates are positioned for either general surgery practice or competitive fellowship training. The program states it seeks "future physician leaders from diverse backgrounds that align with our program mission and aims," valuing holistic engagement with underserved, complex trauma/burn populations over narrow academic pedigree alone.
