Program Identity & Fit

Summa Health/NEOMED is a community-based general surgery program with a university-caliber academic culture, founded in 1930 as Ohio's oldest accredited surgical program. Training emphasizes early, high-volume operative exposure and progressive autonomy toward becoming primary surgeon, supported by a broad rotation structure (trauma/critical care, vascular, cardiothoracic, transplant, pediatric/burn, plastics) and a dedicated Minimally Invasive Fellowship, da Vinci Xi robotics, and an FLS regional testing center. Institutional research infrastructure (Clinical Research Center, DISCOVER Center, Translational Research Center) is available to residents but the program's stated identity centers on operative volume and technical/clinical judgment rather than investigative output.
