Program Identity & Fit

This is a university-affiliated, community-embedded general surgery program built around a Level 1 trauma center (Prisma Health Richland) serving a nearly one-million-person Midlands region, supplemented by focused rotations at Baptist Hospital (MIS/bariatrics), the VA (endoscopy), a rural community site in Sumter, and an apprenticeship-style private practice rotation with a program alumnus. The identity centers on early operative autonomy and progressive independence within a small number of core sites rather than broad institutional rotation, explicitly designed to prepare residents equally for direct community practice, competitive fellowships, or academic surgical careers. Research and QI are mandatory but modestly scaled - resident-driven case reports, QI projects, and clinical outcomes work rather than lab-based or externally funded investigation - reflecting an expectation of research literacy rather than research identity. The program values applicants who demonstrate readiness for hands-on responsibility, comfort with high-acuity/trauma volume, and interest in seeing varied practice models (academic, rural, private, VA) to determine individual career fit.
