Riverside Methodist is a large, community-based teaching hospital program (1,059 beds) that trains five categorical and four preliminary residents per year without competing against in-house fellows for case volume. The curriculum follows a traditional graduated-autonomy model, with residents assuming primary responsibility for attending, uninsured, and trauma patients by PGY4-5, supplemented by rotations at OSU Wexner Medical Center, Nationwide Children's Hospital, and the VA Ambulatory Care Center for academic and pediatric/veteran exposure. Simulation-based skills training (CME+I lab with robotics, laparoscopy, microvascular, and endovascular labs) and a one-on-one subspecialty mentorship match support technical development, while scholarly activity is encouraged and resourced through OhioHealth's institutional research infrastructure but not positioned as the program's central identity. Recent graduate outcomes show a strong split between fellowship subspecialization (trauma/critical care, plastics, vascular, cardiothoracic, hepatobiliary) and private practice, indicating the program values residents who can handle high clinical volume with progressive independence rather than a single narrow career track.
