NYU Grossman's Manhattan General Surgery Residency is a tertiary academic program built around three distinct clinical sites—NYU Langone's Tisch Hospital/Kimmel Pavilion, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System—giving residents exposure spanning quaternary private academic care, a major public safety-net hospital, and veteran-specific care. The program is small and selective, matching eight categorical residents annually, and graduates routinely place into competitive subspecialty fellowships in their top-choice programs, signaling a fellowship-track culture rather than a community general surgery orientation. Research is structurally embedded but not mandatory: residents are strongly encouraged to take one to two dedicated research years after PGY2 or PGY3, supported by NYU's extensive biomedical research infrastructure (Vilcek Institute, CTSI, PhD/MD-PhD faculty network). The program emphasizes progressive autonomy and graduated surgical decision-making responsibility across sites of varying acuity and resource level, and values residents who can operate confidently across a private academic tertiary center and a high-volume public safety-net hospital simultaneously.
