Mohawk Valley Health System's General Surgery Residency is a newly-accredited, community-based program built around the newly-constructed Wynn Hospital in Utica, NY, serving as a Level III Trauma Center for the Oneida/Herkimer/Madison county region of Central New York. The program is organized into four clinical teams spanning general, thoracic, vascular, plastics, bariatric, ENT, and trauma/SICU services, with additional away rotations in hepatobiliary surgery (Albany) and pediatric surgery (Buffalo), supplementing a comparatively modest home case mix typical of a start-up program. Scholarly activity is structured but not the program's centerpiece: each categorical resident is paired with a mentor and given protected time, framed as developmental rather than as a research-heavy identity. As an inaugural program explicitly building "a culture of education, cooperation, teamwork, growth and continuous quality improvement," it appears to value applicants who can help establish program culture and demonstrate both clinical commitment and scholastic engagement in a growing community surgical service.
