Methodist Healthcare System of San Antonio's General Surgery Residency is a newly launched, community-based HCA program built around a broad clinical curriculum spanning trauma, transplant, cardiothoracic, colorectal, oncology/HPB, burn, and private-practice rotations at Methodist Hospital and its participating sites. As an inaugural program (first two classes just recruited, with three PGY-2 transfers from established programs plus an initial PGY-1 cohort), it emphasizes building institutional identity, resident involvement in hospital committees and quality-improvement initiatives, and protected didactic time within HCA's national scholarly-activity infrastructure. Research is supported through HCA's system-wide resources (30+ million annual patient encounters, national research coordinators, HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine) rather than being a defining institutional pillar, and the breadth of subspecialty rotations suggests a general-surgery training model oriented toward comprehensive operative exposure rather than a fellowship pipeline in any single niche.
