Program Identity & Fit

Methodist Health System's General Surgery Residency is a community-based, tertiary-care program anchored at Methodist Dallas Medical Center, a Level I Trauma Center with active solid organ transplant, hepatobiliary, and minimally invasive/robotic surgery programs. Residents rotate across multiple sites (Children's Medical Center of Dallas for pediatric surgery, Methodist Richardson for HPB, Parkland for burn surgery) providing broad exposure to complex surgical disease, and serve the underserved Oak Cliff community through the Golden Cross Academic Clinic. Research is supported through a dedicated Clinical Research Institute with staff resources for residents pursuing scholarly work, but the program's identity centers on producing technically sound general surgeons prepared either for direct community practice (about one-third of graduates) or competitive fellowship match (vascular, MIS/bariatric, plastic, breast, surgical critical care). The program values hands-on clinical volume, one-on-one operative experience with fellowship-trained faculty, and a long-standing track record reflected in a decade-plus 100% written board pass rate.
