This is a high-volume, community-based general surgery program anchored at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center with cross-town rotations at Johns Hopkins Hospital and University of Maryland Shock Trauma, giving residents unusually broad exposure to trauma, transplant, pediatric surgery, and vascular care without competing fellows diluting case volume. Residents graduate with 1,000-1,200 major cases by PGY-5, reflecting a program built around operative autonomy and early hands-on responsibility rather than subspecialty niche training. Fellowship placement is a defining outcome - graduates consistently pursue vascular, colorectal, transplant, MIS, trauma/critical care, and thoracic fellowships at strong academic centers - and the REI research curriculum plus an optional dedicated research year after PGY-2 signal that scholarly output is structured into the pathway even though the program identity remains fundamentally clinical and case-volume driven. The program values residents who thrive with graduated autonomy, cross-institutional rotation logistics, and a trajectory toward subspecialty fellowship rather than immediate community general surgery practice.
