Saint Joseph Hospital's General Surgery Residency is Colorado's oldest surgical training program, a five-year categorical track (six residents/year, five preliminary) built on high-volume, faculty-supervised operative experience—chief residents graduate with over 1,100 cases—supplemented by partnerships with University of Colorado and Denver Health for trauma, burn, transplant, and pediatric surgery exposure. The curriculum is structured around a case-based learning model with a 5:1 learner-to-faculty ratio, a day-one robotics curriculum, twice-yearly city-wide mock oral boards, and a longstanding global surgery pathway centered on an annual Zambia mission trip led by a dedicated faculty surgeon. Research is present through Intermountain's broader clinical trials infrastructure but is not positioned as central to the program's identity, which instead emphasizes operative volume, technical breadth across subspecialties, resilience/wellness programming, and readiness for either general surgery practice or fellowship.
