This is a newly established, community-based general surgery residency within the HCA Healthcare system, serving Eastern Jackson County near Kansas City with an emphasis on early, progressive operative autonomy through an apprenticeship-style attending pairing model. The curriculum leverages high-volume general surgery combined with structured off-site rotations (pediatric surgery at Children's Mercy, transplant/hepatobiliary at University of Nebraska) and access to six Da Vinci Xi robotic systems and a new simulation center, while notably positioning itself as a non-robotics-focused training ground for open and laparoscopic skill development. As an inaugural HCA program, it emphasizes building culture, resident wellness (via HCA's system-wide "Pathways to Flourishing" model), and personalized mentorship in a small-cohort environment rather than an established academic pipeline. Research is supported through HCA's national infrastructure (30+ million patient encounters, research coordinators, HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine) but is described as encouraged and available rather than a defining institutional pillar, and the program explicitly supports trainees heading toward either fellowship or private practice.
