Program Identity & Fit

This is a community-based, HCA/USF-affiliated general surgery program (20 categorical, 4 preliminary positions) built on a multi-site consortium model, with core training at Brandon Hospital and rotations through Bayonet Point, Largo, and Trinity Hospitals, plus subspecialty exposure at Moffitt Cancer Center and Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital. The curriculum layers general surgery and acute care surgery with structured exposure to thoracic, vascular, hepatobiliary, pediatric, transplant, and surgical oncology services, giving residents a broad subspecialty footprint uncommon in a purely community setting. Research is explicitly required, not optional, supported by a division-wide Scholarly Activity Team and access to large deidentified patient datasets for abstracts, case studies, and conference presentations. The program frames its outcomes broadly - community practice, academic medicine, or fellowship - indicating it values residents who can operate across a dispersed, high-volume clinical network while still producing scholarly output.
