Garden City Hospital's General Surgery Residency is a community-based, osteopathically-rooted five-year categorical program built around a single core faculty group and a hands-on, high-autonomy operative apprenticeship model rather than a subspecialty-driven academic structure. Training centers at GCH/LHMC with structured out-rotations to regional Detroit-area centers (DMC Sinai Grace for trauma/SICU, Ascension Providence for hepatobiliary, Henry Ford for transplant, Corewell Farmington Hills for robotics) that supplement core general surgery volume with trauma, vascular, pediatric, and oncologic exposure. Resident scholarly output is real but modest and case-report/conference-driven rather than hypothesis-driven laboratory science, consistent with a program that values clinical productivity and operative competence over investigative rigor. The long-tenured DO program director and the program's osteopathic academic affiliations (MSU-COM, Ohio University) signal a pathway that has historically trained and valued osteopathic general surgeons headed toward community surgical practice.
