Program Identity & Fit

This is a community-based general surgery residency at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, established as the first general surgery program in Florida's Panhandle, pairing early hands-on operative training with the academic backing of the FSU College of Medicine. The program explicitly aims to produce well-rounded general surgeons capable of practicing in either rural community settings or large academic institutions, and exposes residents to robotic surgery, endovascular techniques, and telemedicine. Resident interests skew heavily toward rural general surgery, acute care/critical care, and broad-based general surgical practice, with several trainees explicitly naming rural medicine as a career goal. Research is supported and encouraged (poster fairs, regional/national meetings) but is not positioned as central to the program's identity, consistent with its practice-ready, community-oriented mission.
