South Pointe Hospital's General Surgery residency is a five-year, ACGME-accredited program with Continued Osteopathic Recognition, operating as a community-based osteopathic training site under the Cleveland Clinic main campus sponsoring institution and affiliated with Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. Training centers on a busy community hospital surgical environment with a $40 million surgery center and 24-bed ICU, supplemented by specialty rotations at Cleveland Clinic main campus (colorectal, endocrine, thoracic, hepatobiliary), Akron Children's (pediatric surgery/burn), and MetroHealth/Case Western (trauma), giving residents broad exposure beyond a single site. The curriculum embeds continuity clinic half-days throughout all five years, OMT/osteopathic-specific didactics and skills labs, and a structured board-review and simulation (FLS/FES) skills program, reflecting a strong osteopathic identity layered onto general surgical training.
