Anne Arundel Medical Center's Surgery Residency is a community-based, university-affiliated program built around a single primary teaching hospital (LHAAMC) supplemented by a second system site (LHDCMC) and off-campus rotations at Johns Hopkins (pediatric surgery, transplant) and University of Maryland Shock Trauma. Structured around a dedicated simulation center (SAIL), the curriculum blends operative training with a first-year interprofessional series in research, bioethics, well-being, and society & medicine, and residents are expected to present and publish scholarly work rather than pursue research as a primary identity. Graduate outcomes are split fairly evenly between subspecialty fellowship (trauma/critical care, vascular, plastics, bariatric/MIS, surgical oncology, breast, abdominal wall reconstruction) and direct entry into general surgery practice, including community and military practice, indicating the program trains for both pathways rather than funneling toward academia exclusively. The program values residents who can handle broad general surgical exposure with early technical responsibility and who engage in both patient care and modest scholarly output within a "family," community-culture environment.
