UTHSC Psychiatry is a university-affiliated, community-immersed program built around a wide spread of clinical sites in Memphis - the VA Medical Center, Memphis Mental Health Institute, Regional One Health (a safety-net trauma and tertiary center), Lakeside Behavioral Health System, Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, and Alliance Healthcare Services - giving residents exposure to underserved, acutely ill, and forensic/state-hospital populations alongside a structured longitudinal psychotherapy curriculum (motivational interviewing through psychodynamic, CBT, DBT, ACT, MBSR). Research is present but elective rather than central: a single mandatory scholarly activity, optional half-day/week research blocks in PGY-3/PGY-4, and institutional R1 resources exist, but the curriculum's emphasis is clearly clinical breadth and psychotherapy competency over investigation. Career outcomes among current residents skew toward general adult outpatient practice, inpatient/CL work, and named subspecialty interests (forensic, reproductive, addiction, interventional/neuromodulation, child/adolescent, sports psychiatry), reflecting a program that supports individualized track-building within a flexible elective system (TMS/PHP, sleep medicine, forensics, addiction, administrative psychiatry) rather than pushing a single fellowship pipeline. The program values residents who are clinically versatile, comfortable with high-acuity/safety-net populations, and self-directed enough to shape their own elective and psychotherapy caseload.
