DHR Health's Psychiatry Residency is a community-based, four-year program in the Rio Grande Valley, affiliated with the University of Houston Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine and training residents at DHR Health's behavioral hospital and the Hope Family Health Center. Its patient population draws from a broad socioeconomic and ethnic mix across the RGV and northern Mexico, giving residents exposure to the full range of major psychiatric diagnoses alongside significant underserved and cross-border health disparities. The program builds in longitudinal research and quality-improvement sessions during clinic weeks and formal didactics, explicitly aiming to prepare residents for fellowship competitiveness while also producing independent psychiatrists skilled in both medication management and psychotherapy. It emphasizes physician well-being and leadership development, positioning itself as a training ground for psychiatrists comfortable leading interdisciplinary teams in a resource-variable, safety-net-adjacent environment.
