Program Identity & Fit

This is a faith-based, community-rooted pediatric residency at a former community hospital that has grown into an independent academic medical center serving children across the Gulf South. The program's defining feature is its dedicated Primary Care Track (one of the few in the U.S.), which offers doubled continuity clinic time, primary-care-focused journal clubs, and individualized outpatient career development, alongside a required Community Medicine/Advocacy rotation involving school-based clinics, child abuse clinic work, WIC shadowing, and a CATCH grant project. Research exists as a supported scholarly pathway (case reports, CORNET practice-based research network, independent projects) rather than a defining institutional pillar, and most graduates shown have gone into general and community-based pediatric practice locally rather than subspecialty fellowships. The program explicitly values residents drawn to advocacy, community outreach, continuity-based ambulatory care, and service to an underserved, faith-mission-driven patient population, while still preserving flexibility for residents who discover a subspecialty interest.
