Penrose Hospital's Pathology Residency is a small, community-based AP/CP program built around a single anchor hospital, emphasizing hands-on, high-volume clinical training with graduated autonomy at the microscope rather than a research-driven academic model. The curriculum is explicitly practical, focused on efficient sign-out, frozen sections, blood bank call, and the administrative and leadership skills needed to run a pathology practice, with six months of elective time used largely for fellowship-oriented away rotations. Its long-standing (since 1950) small cohort structure (two residents/year, up to eight total, 15 staff pathologists) fosters close, personalized mentorship and a strong sense of departmental continuity, and the program has a consistent track record of placing graduates into competitive subspecialty fellowships (hematopathology, GI, dermatopathology, forensics, cytopathology) at outside academic centers. The program values adaptability, diagnostic independence, collegiality, and practical competence over formal scholarly output.
