UND's Neurology Residency is a four-year categorical program based at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, a tertiary referral and comprehensive stroke center serving a 1.5-million-person catchment across the Dakotas region, with additional training at Fargo VA and a required pediatric neurology block in Sioux Falls. The program is explicitly workforce-mission driven, aiming to build a neurologist pipeline for an underserved, extreme-shortage region, while offering subspecialty exposure across stroke, epilepsy, MS, movement disorders, and neuromuscular disease, plus a forthcoming MS/Neuroimmunology fellowship. Research is a structured expectation rather than optional: residents complete at least one publishable project with two dedicated research months in PGY-3/4 and Sanford's clinical research infrastructure, and recent graduates have gone on to fellowships in vascular neurology, neuromuscular disease, epilepsy, and neuro-oncology at other institutions. The program emphasizes collegiality, faculty accessibility, and a small-community/tight-knit training culture, valuing residents drawn to a regional-service mission and a lower-key, family-oriented setting over a major metro academic center.
