Program Identity & Fit

Ochsner's Neurology Residency is a large tertiary/quaternary academic program anchored in the Ochsner Neuroscience Institute, drawing patients across the Gulf South and internationally through named centers of excellence in stroke, epilepsy, ALS, Parkinson's, MS, and Huntington's disease, plus a 34-bed neurocritical care unit. Categorical PGY-1 training occurs under Ochsner Internal Medicine with up to four months of neurology exposure, and residents rotate through subspecialties including neuroimmunology, movement disorders, sports neurology, and interventional neurology, supported by an ACGME-accredited Vascular Neurology fellowship and several non-ACGME fellowships (neurocritical care, neuroendovascular, movement disorders, sports neurology) run in-house. Research is institutionally required and actively resourced through telemedicine, VR/AR/3D-printing, and population-health/machine-learning initiatives, and alumni outcomes show a strong tilt toward subspecialty fellowship (vascular neurology, MS/neuroimmunology, epilepsy, movement disorders) alongside some direct-to-practice and hospitalist paths. The program explicitly states a "fit over fill" philosophy, pairs PGY-1s with longitudinal faculty mentors, and signals it values self-directed applicants who articulate a clear neurological interest and community-oriented purpose rather than pedigree alone.
