Program Identity & Fit

This is the only university-based neurology department in metropolitan Detroit, a four-year categorical program (10 positions/year) built around the safety-net Detroit Medical Center, Karmanos Cancer Institute, and the John D. Dingell VA, giving residents exposure to acute, severe, and underserved neurologic disease alongside subspecialty centers (Level 4 epilepsy center, large MS/neuroimmunology practice, movement disorders, neurocritical care, comprehensive stroke center). Research is present and mentored but not obligatory—residents produce case reports and QI/education projects and present regionally/nationally, supported by nine basic-science labs and an advanced imaging laboratory, though the program explicitly states prior research is not required. Graduate outcomes are overwhelmingly fellowship-directed (epilepsy, neurocritical care, vascular, neuroimmunology, movement disorders, clinical neurophysiology) at strong academic centers, with a smaller share entering community/private practice or academic faculty roles, indicating a program oriented toward subspecialization while still producing general neurologists. The program values holistic, blinded review, critical thinking, adaptability across care settings, and explicitly welcomes URM and first-generation applicants without imposing research or clerkship prerequisites.
