Abbott Northwestern's Adult Neurology Residency is a newly launched program (Minnesota's first new neurology program in roughly 80 years) housed within Allina Health's large, community-embedded Brain and Spine Institute, offering a high-acuity, high-volume clinical environment anchored by Comprehensive Stroke Center, Level 4 Epilepsy Center, and Givens Brain Tumor Center designations. Its identity blends tertiary/quaternary subspecialty depth (vascular neurology, neurocritical care, epilepsy, movement disorders, neuro-oncology, neuroimmunology) with an explicit regional-access mission, using teleneurology and telestroke to extend quaternary-level outcomes to rural and underserved Minnesota/Wisconsin communities. Research is named as a program aim ("significant scientific contributions," participation in national meetings) but is not positioned as the program's central identity; the greater emphasis is on close faculty mentorship, multidisciplinary collaboration, and building clinical excellence and workforce capacity to address a regional neurologist shortage. As an inaugural program, it appears to value residents comfortable with a developing structure who want broad subspecialty exposure, a role in shaping program culture, and engagement with an academically active but hospital-system-based (not university-owned) training model.
