Program Identity & Fit

Rutgers NJMS is a university-based, academic neurosurgery program spanning three affiliated sites (University Hospital Newark, Robert Wood Johnson, and Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center) that together provide full-spectrum cranial, spinal, pediatric, cerebrovascular, endovascular, and peripheral nerve exposure. Its identity is anchored in Level I trauma/stroke care at University Hospital, a dedicated 12-bed neurosurgical ICU, and early adoption of intraoperative MR imaging, reflecting a tertiary/quaternary academic training environment. Research is deeply embedded rather than peripheral: a dedicated PGY5 research year (or enfolded fellowship), active NIH-caliber basic science programs in epilepsy, spinal cord injury, neuropathic pain, and multiple sclerosis, and open brain/spine tumor clinical trials through the NCI-designated Cancer Institute of New Jersey, with residents able to pursue an MPH during protected research time. The program values applicants who can engage meaningfully in translational or laboratory research alongside high-acuity operative training across multiple hospital cultures.
