UNMC's Internal Medicine Residency is a university-based academic program anchored in an extensive subspecialty infrastructure (16 ACGME-accredited IM fellowships) and a large affiliated research enterprise, positioning it toward fellowship training and academic careers while still maintaining a strong ambulatory/primary care clinic base (70+ specialty and primary care clinics). The program treats scholarship as an integrated expectation rather than an elective add-on, offering dedicated research months, scholarly weeks, a resident-run GME research journal, and structured QI/patient safety curricula tied to institutional priorities. A distinguishing feature is the HEAL track, a competency-based interprofessional medical education pathway that channels residents into academic teaching and leadership roles, with alumni now serving as associate program directors and national GME conference leaders. The program values residents oriented toward scholarly output, teaching, quality improvement, and longitudinal academic identity within a collaborative, health-equity-conscious culture.
